What is nubuck leather?
Rauleder ist nicht gleich Rauleder. Es ist ein Sammelbegriff für alle Lederarten mit einer geschliffenen Oberfläche. Darunter zählen Veloursleder, genauso wie das narbenseitig geschliffene Nubukleder.Vorsicht, Verwechslungsgefahr! Auch wenn Rauleder und Wildleder im täglichen Sprachgebrauch gern synonym verwendet werden, beschreiben diese beiden Ledervarianten Unterschiedliches. Als Wildleder werden Lederarten bezeichnet, die aus der Haut von Wildtieren wie Hirschen, Rehen oder Wildschweinen gewonnen werden. Rauleder, also Velours- oder Nubukleder, hingegen beschreibt ein Herstellungsverfahren, bei dem die Oberfläche des Leders gespalten oder angeschliffen wird und so eine samtige Haptik erhält.
NUBUCK LEATHER AND VELOUR LEATHER – WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Sowohl Velours- als auch Nubukleder sind Raulederarten mit einem ausgeprägten Lederflor. Unterschiedlich sind jedoch die Herstellungsverfahren, die zu der charakteristisch samtigen Griffigkeit des Rauleders führen.
WIE ENTSTEHT NUBUKLEDER?
Zur Herstellung von Nubukleder werden überwiegend feine Kalbs- oder Rindshäute verwendet, die narbenseitig angeschliffen werden. Das Anschleifen des Leders erfolgt durch metallisches Schleifen, so dass ein feiner Flor entsteht. Die Oberfläche des Leders wird dadurch angeraut, ohne dass es seine Dichte und Festigkeit verliert. Veloursleder ist ein Spaltleder und wird aus dem Fleischspalt gewonnen, wodurch es eine geringere Oberflächendichte aufweist. Daher wird das Nubukleder meist als die edlere Raulederart wahrgenommen.
WHAT ARE THERE AREA OF APPLICATION FOR NUBUK?
The suppleness and soft feel of nubuck leather make it a popular material for upholstered furniture and clothing such as leather jackets and trousers. As mentioned earlier, nubuck leather is very breathable. Thanks to its open-pored structure, water vapor and perspiration can escape more easily than with smooth leather. Impregnation can further enhance the leather's water resistance. These advantageous properties make this leather particularly popular in the sports and hiking sectors and also an excellent choice for climbing and work gloves.
Advantages of nubuck leather
The luxurious nubuck leather is soft and breathable, yet more durable than other types of suede. The roughening process makes the surface soft and supple, giving it its characteristic warm, velvety feel. Small scratches and scuffs can often be almost completely concealed with the help of special care brushes.
DISADVANTAGES OF NUBUK LEATHER
While nubuck leather is more robust than its relative suede, its roughened surface makes it more susceptible to dirt and UV light compared to smooth leathers. Proper care and waterproofing are therefore extremely important for nubuck leather as well.
HOW DO YOU CARE FOR AND CLEAN NUBUCK LEATHER?
If the leather is carefully cared for and impregnated, you can enjoy the fine products made of nubuck leather for a very long time.
It's important to know the special characteristics of nubuck leather: its roughened surface makes it more supple, but also more susceptible to moisture, dirt, and UV light. Therefore, protect your nubuck leather products with a suitable waterproofing treatment.
To clean leather of light soiling such as dust, it's best to brush it dry with a leather brush. Small scratches and tears can often be concealed effectively with the brush as well. Special raw rubber brushes are also available for nubuck leather. Additionally, melamine foam erasers are suitable for suede to remove spot stains.
Nubuck leather absorbs moisture and oils like a sponge, leading to stains that are difficult to remove. Therefore, you should protect your nubuck leather products from moisture and never allow them to come into contact with oily care products.
For regular leather care, gently roughen the material with a brush and then reseal it with a suede impregnation.
